Today, September 7, marks the second anniversary of the publication of our book! So much has happened in the past two years that we decided to spare you the time and not sum it all up. Instead, we have decided to start something new.

If you have been a subscriber for long enough, you might remember from an earlier newsletter that our entire idea for writing a book—and, therefore, launching this newsletter—arose from a conversation we had about Dominic’s local book club. His book club didn’t love (ok, pretty much hated) the popular science book he had recommended (oops!) and this led us to try to write our own.

Drawing on that inspiration, we have decided to create our own virtual book club for our newsletter subscribers in which you can tell us if you love or hate our book! You’ll have a chance to ask the authors (us) tough questions, meet other people with similar interests, and maybe find the occasion an inspiration to write your own book! We’ll give you the full backstory of what it was like to write the book (during a pandemic while trapped at home with our kids) and highlights of what has happened since.

We plan to host the first meeting in October and a second in November. If there is enough interest, we will continue to hold them every month until people stop signing up. We plan to keep the groups small enough for everyone to give a brief introduction, share thoughts, and ask a question or two. Please share this invitation with anyone who might be interested in reading the book and meeting some interesting people.

To sign up for the book club, you simply need to fill out this short form. We will then email you (keeping your email private) and send you an invitation to a meeting. The only requirement is that you get a copy of our book (either from your local bookstore, online, or the library), read it, and show up with a question or two you have about the book.

The Power of Us is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, IndieBound, and other fine bookstores everywhere.

This is an opportunity we offer to anyone, but we are advertising it to our newsletter subscribers first. We also plan to report back to you how it went — and hopefully the questions and comments will help to inspire and influence our next book!

On that note, we also want to share that, moving forward, we will be using our newsletter to workshop ideas for our next book. We are currently writing a book proposal—a more practical follow-up to The Power of Us. We will be sharing stories and studies and asking readers for feedback and suggestions to make the book come to life. Please stay tuned for more!

A Giveaway!

Finally, to mark the two year anniversary since our book launch, we are offering a book giveaway: one to the 3000th newsletter subscriber and one to a randomly selected current subscriber who shares this newsletter on their social media platform of choice (please tag our Power of Us account). Our community of subscribers now numbers more than the entire hometown of Fox Creek, Alberta where Jay grew up and a little less than half the population of Newcastle, Ontario when Dom was raised there!

The POWER OF US Course: A syllabus with articles and activities for teaching about identity

With the new school year on the horizon, we created a syllabus for anyone interested in teaching about “The Power of Shared Identity” based on our book. This is a chance for people to learn directly from our book, but also go beyond it and dig into the underlying research and educational materials we created. We suggest reading some the most relevant …
